The Grand Finale of ClassAct 2023 \u2013 The Hindustan Times Republic Day Quiz held on 5th February.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the Grand Finale, quizmasters Dr. Navin Jayakumar and Mr. Avinash Mudaliar share their pearls of wisdom with the finalists.<\/p>\n

New Delhi (India), February 6<\/strong>: HT School, a one stop destination for young quizzing enthusiasts commenced its quizzing\u00a0journey\u00a0last year\u00a0with\u00a0ClassAct 2022,\u00a0The Hindustan\u00a0Times\u00a0Republic Day\u00a0Quiz\u00a0which\u00a0created a record-setting success. In fact, it made all the way to the Asia Book of Records and\u00a0India Book of Records for \u2018Maximum Participation in an Online School Quiz\u2019.\u00a0This\u00a0propelled the second edition of the mega quizzing event ClassAct 2023 \u2013 The Hindustan\u00a0Times Republic Day Quiz. It kicked off with the Prelims round held on 26th\u00a0January from, the day India commemorated its 74th\u00a0Republic Day. What\u2019s impressive is that this time the number of participants was 21,540 as against last year\u2019s 19,625 \u2013 a great feat in itself.<\/p>\n

Following the resounding success of the Prelims round of this online Pan India quiz that is\u00a0meant for all school students of grades 1 to 12, participants are now gearing up for the much-\u00a0awaited Grand Finale that will be conducted on 5th\u00a0February from 10am to 12pm by two of\u00a0the\u00a0India\u2019s reputed quizmasters,\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Navin Jayakumar\u00a0and\u00a0Avinash Mudaliar.<\/p>\n

The Prelims of\u00a0ClassAct 2023-The Hindustan Times Republic Day Quiz\u00a0<\/a>was conducted\u00a0asynchronously, while the Grand Finale will be conducted over Zoom and live streamed on\u00a0HT School\u2019s official YouTube channel. All contestants will receive participation certificates\u00a0while the finalists will stand a chance to win exciting Amazon gift vouchers worth INR 1.25\u00a0lakh.\u00a0The\u00a0winners\u00a0will\u00a0be\u00a0selected\u00a0purely\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0basis\u00a0of\u00a0their\u00a0performance,\u00a0where\u00a0both\u00a0speed\u00a0and\u00a0accuracy will\u00a0be\u00a0taken\u00a0into\u00a0consideration.<\/p>\n

The quizmaster duo has shared their pearls of wisdom with the participants as they gear up for the Grand Finale of ClassAct 2023 \u2013 The Hindustan Times Republic Day Quiz.<\/p>\n

Cool\u00a0tips\u00a0from\u00a0Dr. Navin\u00a0Jayakumar<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. Navin Jayakumar is an ophthalmologist by profession and has recently been elected as the President of Indian Neuro-Ophthalmologist Society. A quizmaster by passion, he is the founding member of The Quiz Foundation of India. Dr. Jayakumar has been the quizmaster for famous national-level quizzes, such as the Landmark Quiz, the Murugappa Madras Quotient School Quiz and the Rotary Galaxy Science and Technology Quiz among others. Here are his suggestions.<\/p>\n

Read, record, recall:\u00a0The reputed quizmaster Neil O\u2019Brien (considered as the Father of\u00a0Indian Quizzing) described this trio of acts as his method of becoming a successful quizzer.\u00a0I\u2019ll add one more step to these: REVISE. It comes right after RECORD. So, this is how one\u00a0should go about it: READ a lot and read widely, RECORD the interesting facts that you read\u00a0in a notebook, REVISE what you wrote before a quiz and finally RECALL the fact during a\u00a0quiz!<\/p>\n

Invest time in lateral thinking:\u00a0Make\u00a0connections\u00a0between\u00a0seemingly\u00a0unconnected\u00a0facts.\u00a0For\u00a0example,\u00a0certain plant\u00a0seeds and Velcro. If one\u00a0reads\u00a0about\u00a0plant\u00a0burrs\u00a0(little\u00a0seeds\u00a0with\u00a0hooks that can attach to your clothes to help the seed find a new home), one may soon\u00a0discover\u00a0that\u00a0it\u00a0was the\u00a0inspiration behind the\u00a0invention of Velcro!<\/p>\n

Be a part of quiz clubs:\u00a0Quiz clubs, be it at school or outside, are a great way not just to\u00a0improve one\u2019s quizzing knowledge but also to make friends. For instance, the Quiz\u00a0Foundation of India in Chennai to which I belong, meets on alternate Sundays when one\u00a0member\u00a0will\u00a0set\u00a0a\u00a0quiz\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0others\u00a0form\u00a0teams\u00a0to\u00a0answer.\u00a0If\u00a0there\u00a0is no\u00a0quiz\u00a0club\u00a0around\u00a0you,\u00a0start\u00a0one!<\/p>\n

Focus on practice: Try out the innumerable online quizzes available, watch quiz contest recordings on YouTube, and take part in every quiz competition that you hear about. For seasoned quizzers, one would recommend joining an online quiz league. Remember to always play fair and not use Google for answers. Similarly, stay true to your passion for quizzing and do not use an accomplice to feed you answers while taking part in an online quiz game. Quizzing is sport and any sport requires sportsmanship and fair play!<\/p>\n

Try being a quizmaster:\u00a0One of the best ways to excel in a subject is to prepare questions on\u00a0it for a quiz. Quizmasters have to dive deep into a subject and explore all its ramifications to\u00a0make\u00a0a\u00a0good set\u00a0of questions and\u00a0then try\u00a0their\u00a0hands\u00a0at\u00a0conducting quizzes.<\/p>\n

If\u202fit’s\u202fa\u202fgood\u202fday,\u202fmake\u202fit\u202fa\u202fgreat\u202fone:\u202fSome days you will unearth a rare nugget of\u00a0information\u202for\u202fa precious new fact that most people are unaware of. Don’t remain satisfied\u00a0with\u00a0that\u00a0discovery.\u202fTry\u00a0and\u00a0learn\u202ffive\u202for\u202ften\u202fother\u00a0related\u00a0things\u00a0about\u00a0what\u00a0you\u00a0discovered.\u00a0In\u00a0quizzing,\u00a0like\u00a0in\u00a0cricket,\u00a0it\u00a0is\u00a0always the\u202f\u2018extras\u2019\u202fthat\u00a0matter\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0end!<\/p>\n

Interact with other quizzers:\u202fBe a part of an active quiz community, group, club, or society\u00a0that meets regularly and quizzes together with gusto. It is only by interacting with like-\u00a0minded\u00a0knowledge\u00a0hunters that\u00a0your\u00a0own\u00a0skills will\u00a0develop,\u00a0grow,\u00a0and\u00a0become\u00a0sharper.<\/p>\n

Remember,\u00a0those\u00a0who\u00a0quiz\u00a0together,\u00a0grow\u00a0together.<\/p>\n

Practise\u202fmaking quiz questions:\u202fQuite often, the best way to become a better quizzer is to get into the habit of making quiz questions of your own. Be it your class in school, or your circle of friends\u202fand family,\u202fdevelop\u202fthe\u202fhabit of converting what you know into interesting quiz questions\u202fthat you can ask. The very act of stepping into the quizmaster’s shoes helps\u202fyou understand\u202fthe myriad ways in which a simple fact can become a\u202ftantalising quiz\u00a0question!<\/p>\n

Focus on match practice:\u202fGet into the habit of participating in as many quizzes as you can, at as many levels as you can, and as often as you can. All the reading and knowledge- gathering in the world is useless as a quizzer unless you test your mettle in the heat of battle by crossing swords with ot.her quiz-loving buffs like yourself. Only when you come up against a variety of quiz-mastering styles and a variety of quizzing oppositions that\u202fyou\u202ftruly\u202frealise\u202fhow good (or not-so-good!)\u202fyou\u202freally are. And remember, it does not matter whether you win or lose.\u202fIf you win, you remember those answers only once. But\u202fif you\u202flose once because of a bad answer or two, you will never forget those facts till the end of time!<\/p>\n
