Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], May 17:<\/strong>\u00a0 Prominent Kolkata-based culturist, social activist, and trustee of the Prabha Khaitan Foundation, Mr. Sundeep Bhutoria<\/strong>, will attend the highly anticipated screening of\u00a0Satyajit Ray\u2019s restored masterpiece\u00a0<\/strong>Aranyer Din Ratri (Days and Nights in the Forest)<\/em>\u00a0at the\u00a078th Cannes Film Festival<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a019th May 2025<\/strong>.<\/div>\n

This marks the\u00a0first-ever Cannes screening<\/strong> of the 1970 classic, which will be showcased in a newly restored version. The event will reunite, after 55 years, the film\u2019s legendary cast members, Sharmila Tagore and Simi Garewal<\/strong>, whose presence will add to the historic significance of the occasion.<\/p>\n

Expressing his enthusiasm,\u00a0Mr Bhutoria<\/strong>\u00a0said,\u00a0\u201cI am deeply honoured to attend the premiere of the restored Aranyer Din Ratri at The Cannes. This is my first visit to the festival, and it is all the more special because of my long association with the Dutta family, the original producers of the film. Unfortunately, Esha Dutta, who collaborates closely with the Prabha Khaitan Foundation\u00a0<\/em>and its associate organisations<\/em>, is unable to join due to a family emergency.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Mr Bhutoria also acknowledged the efforts behind the restoration, stating,\u00a0\u201cI extend my heartfelt gratitude to film maker and archivist\u00a0<\/em>Shivendra Singh Dungarpur<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/em>Film Heritage Foundation<\/strong>\u00a0for their pivotal role in this extraordinary restoration project. I have known Sri Dungarpur personally for over a decade since he started the project with a missionary zeal in 2014. He has contributed immensely to safeguard endangered celluloid films, promote film literacy, and train archivists. Their dedication ensures that Ray\u2019s genius continues to inspire future generations.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Aranyer Din Ratri<\/em>, based on Sunil Gangopadhyay\u2019s novel of the same name, explores themes of urban escapism, class and gender dynamics and human relationships with unparalleled depth. The film follows\u00a0four urban friends \u2013 <\/strong>Asim (Soumitra Chatterjee), Sanjoy (Subhendu Chatterjee), Hari (Samit Bhanja), and Shekhar (Rabi Ghosh) \u2013 who escape their mundane city lives for a\u00a0weekend trip to the forests of Palamau (Bihar)<\/strong>. Their journey becomes a\u00a0metaphor for self-discovery<\/strong>\u00a0as their interactions with rural life and two local women \u2013 Aparna (Sharmila Tagore) and Jaya (Simi Garewal) \u2013 expose their urban pretensions, insecurities, and existential dilemmas.<\/p>\n

The film is celebrated as one of Ray\u2019s finest works, blending\u00a0psychological depth, social commentary, and lyrical storytelling<\/strong>. The film\u2019s screening at The Cannes \u2013 a somewhat belated recognition compared to Ray\u2019s other films \u2013 underscores the festival\u2019s enduring reverence for the\u00a0Oscar-winning auteur<\/strong>, whose films remain a cornerstone of world cinema.<\/p>\n
