New Delhi [India], January 9:<\/span> <\/strong>India has the first human spaceflight programme<\/strong> called the Gaganyaan Mission<\/strong>. Its objective is precise.\u00a0Introduce\u00a0Indian astronauts<\/strong>\u00a0into\u00a0the low Earth orbit<\/strong>\u00a0of approximately\u00a0400 kilometres<\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0Have three days<\/strong> with them. Return them to the safety of the Indian sea<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

No shortcuts. No borrowed rockets. No shared flags.<\/p>\n

It has been made clear by the ISRO Chairman, S Somanath<\/strong>. This mission is concerning the ability to show<\/strong>.\u00a0In case successful,\u00a0India is a member of an exclusive club<\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0This has not been done previously except by the Soviet Union<\/strong>, the United States<\/strong>, and China<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This is not symbolism. This is systems engineering<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Why 2026 Matters<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In line with ISRO<\/strong>, the first human-crewed Gaganyaan launch<\/strong> is expected to take place by the end of 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Prior to that, three uncrewed missions<\/strong> should be successful. No exceptions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The initial uncrewed flight will take place at the beginning of next year<\/strong>. It was supposed to be held in December<\/strong> but was\u00a0rescheduled due to\u00a0technical issues<\/strong><\/span>. That delay is not a setback. It is discipline<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

There is no optimism in human spaceflight<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\"Gaganyaan<\/p>\n

The Rocket Is Ready. The Tests Come First<\/strong><\/h2>\n

ISRO has ensured that the launch vehicle is prepared<\/strong>. That is not marketing language. It is an indication that the underlying hardware has been developed, assembled, and is in testing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The only thing left is to demonstrate reliability<\/strong> during several test missions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Three uncrewed launch flights<\/strong> will precede the astronauts. Rehearsal is not part of these missions.<\/strong> They are gatekeepers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

When the three are successful,\u00a0the\u00a0green light for<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0the human mission<\/strong> can be given.<\/p>\n

Vyommitra Goes First<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Vyommitra<\/strong> will be in the first uncrewed mission<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Vyommitra is not a mascot. It is a humanoid robot<\/strong> that is aimed at imitating the human situation in space<\/strong>. It will control module parameters<\/strong>, environmental controls<\/strong> and mission sequences<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

If Vyammitra fails<\/strong>, the astronauts wait<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

That is how serious this is.<\/p>\n

Astronauts Are Named. Training Is On<\/strong><\/h2>\n

India has already given names to their astronaut-designates<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Group Captains Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, Angad Pratap, Ajit Krishnan and Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla<\/strong> are the ones.<\/p>\n

The names are not ritual names. They are actively involved in\u00a0mission preparedness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Training is ongoing. Familiarisation of the systems<\/strong>, simulation of missions<\/strong>, and emergency procedures<\/strong>. The low churn that seldom breaks the news.<\/p>\n

It is there that spaceflight is won in reality<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

July 2025 Propulsion Milestone in the Gaganyaan Mission<\/h2>\n

ISRO made a silent breakthrough<\/strong> on July 3, 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Gaganyaan Service Module Propulsion System<\/strong> Two hot tests of the Gaganyaan Service Module Propulsion System<\/strong> were successfully made at the ISRO Propulsion Complex in Mahendragiri<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

One test ran for 30 seconds<\/strong>. The other for 100 seconds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The findings were in line with pre test predictions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This is important since the SMPS<\/strong> is an essential system<\/strong>. It deals with orbital manoeuvring<\/strong> and abort situations<\/strong>. Abort systems are not supplementary in human spaceflight. They are lifelines.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The system has five Liquid Apogee Motor engines<\/strong>, each generating 440 Newtons of thrust<\/strong> and sixteen Reaction Control System thrusters<\/strong>, each generating 100 Newtons<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the extended test, ISRO has\u00a0demonstrated that\u00a0all thrusters and engines can operate<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0in different modes simultaneously<\/strong>. Steady. Pulsed. Coordinated.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is not progressive improvement. This is validation of confidence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

These findings have paved the way for a\u00a0full-duration hot test<\/strong> followed by ISRO.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Different in The Gaganyaan Mission<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Gaganyaan Mission<\/strong> is not in the chase for headlines.<\/p>\n

It is being constructed on conservative design margins<\/strong>, multi-redundancy,<\/strong> and incremental validation<\/strong>. That approach is slower. It is also a way of not attending funerals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

India is not racing anyone. It is credibility in engineering<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The approximate programme cost is approximately 90 billion<\/strong>. By the standards of human spaceflight around the world<\/strong>, that is small.<\/p>\n

This is not cost efficiency in terms of corner-cutting<\/strong>. It concerns indigenous systems<\/strong>, in-house testing<\/strong> and institutional learning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Cost, Capability and Credibility<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If\u00a0Gaganyaan is successful<\/strong>, India will be the\u00a0fourth country<\/strong> to independently launch humans into space.<\/p>\n

That changes perception<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It enhances India\u2019s position in\u00a0international space cooperation<\/strong>.\u00a0It promotes strategic independence<\/strong>. It confirms the decades of popular investment in science and engineering<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

More to the point, it instils internal confidence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Large countries do difficult things when they feel they can.<\/p>\n

Chandrayaan 4 and the Bigger ISRO Play<\/strong><\/h2>\n

As Gaganyaan<\/strong> heads toward human spaceflight, ISRO<\/strong> is already strategising its next lunar leap<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Chandrayaan 4<\/strong> is approved by the government. The mission is bound to touch down near the south pole of the Moon<\/strong> once again. In this case,\u00a0the objective is sample return<\/span>.<\/p>\n

That requires two launches<\/strong>. Space docking<\/strong>. Sample recovery<\/strong>. Earth returns<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

ISRO has made the challenge. No individual rocket is currently available that can accommodate the required mass. The answer to this is orbital assembly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This is not a mission undertaken by every country.<\/p>\n

ISRO intends to try.<\/p>\n

Everything about institutional ambition<\/strong> should be told by that.<\/p>\n

What Gaganyaan Mission Means for India<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Gaganyaan Mission<\/strong> is not a high-profile project. It is a futuristic infrastructure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The deep capability of human spaceflight<\/strong> is established in the fields of materials science<\/strong>, propulsion<\/strong>, avionics<\/strong>, life support<\/strong>, and systems integration<\/strong>. These applications are transferred to defence<\/strong>, aviation<\/strong>, medicine<\/strong>, and manufacturing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In such a way, countries ascend the ladder of technology<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Quietly. Relentlessly.<\/strong><\/p>\n
