The Golden Boy of Kolkata brings immense pride to the nation again

New Delhi (India), June 19: Umang Jaiswal, a resident of Kolkata, West Bengal, has once again brought great honor to his hometown and to the whole nation. This remarkable achievement was made possible by the unwavering support of his late mother, Mrs. Anuradha Jaiswal.

Umang Jaiswal has achieved a remarkable feat at the international level, winning the gold medal in the men’s junior Under-90kg category (drug-tested division) at the Powerlifting World Cup held in St. Petersburg, Russia on June 13th, 2023. His extraordinary strength allowed him to lift over 500+ kilograms, securing his victory.

In addition, Umang achieved a bronze medal in Strict Curls, a sport that was unfamiliar to him as it was separate from powerlifting, known as arm lifting. Despite never having practiced Strict Curls before, Umang was chosen to represent his country and attempt the sport on the stage. Only 12 hours before the competition, Umang received guidance on how to perform the strict curl. He relied on his existing strength and power, applying it to the technique. The outcome was highly satisfying for Umang, considering it was his first attempt at the exercise, and he managed to secure a place in the top three out of eleven contestants.

Umang expresses his heartfelt gratitude to his sponsors, whose support made his journey possible. “I’d especially like to mention Miraj Sir, the senior vice president of Bhawanipore College Society; Pradeep Sir, the secretary; Jitendra Bhai Shah, the joint secretary, as well as the Sports officer Munna Bhaiya and Bhavin Sir for their invaluable contributions,” Umang mentions. 

Umang practices powerlifting at VFA gym located in Kolkata under the guidance of Vineet Mishra. “I cannot forget the countless hours he spent training me, pushing me beyond my limits, and helping me discover my true strength. His expertise, patience, and willingness to go the extra mile to ensure I understood the techniques and strategies of powerlifting had been truly a blessing. He has been an exceptional teacher and mentor.” said Umang. 

Umang also expresses his immense gratitude to Amber Jha, the President of Jan Dwar Mission, for their invaluable support. “I used to be employed at Anytime Fitness, Kolkata, where my role was that of a personal trainer. To manage my expenses related to nutrition and coaching, I would attend college in the morning and work at the gym in the evenings. Additionally, I would train at night to further enhance my skills.

During my time at the gym, I had the pleasure of meeting Amber Jha. Our relationship quickly developed, and now he holds the position of a supportive older brother figure in my life. Amber bhaiya provided his support throughout my journey and generously sponsored me for this tournament,” Umang adds.

Starting from district-level powerlifting, Umang steadily progressed to state-level and national-level championships and has now reached the pinnacle of his sport on the international stage, consistently capturing gold medals along the way.

Umang has achieved several remarkable milestones in powerlifting, capturing attention with the several accomplishments. These achievements reflect Umang’s exceptional skills and dedication to the sport of powerlifting.

Even after achieving victory in the Powerlifting World Cup, Umang remains determined not to take a break solely for celebration, as his goal is to elevate the reputation of his country on a global scale and make his mother immensely proud. With a strong desire to make India renowned in the realm of strength sports, he has committed himself to participating in various upcoming international competitions where he will proudly represent his nation. Undeterred by his recent success, Umang’s ambition drives him to continue pushing his limits and striving for excellence. He deeply values the support and blessings of his motherland, India, as he embarks on his mission to bring his country to the forefront of the strength sport community.
