New Delhi [India], May 20: During a significant demonstration of leadership, India advocated for an inclusive, sustainable, and secure global energy future at the BRICS Energy Ministers’ Meeting held in Brasília, Brazil, on May 19, 2025. Under Brazil’s leadership and the inspiring theme “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance,” the conference warmly welcomed energy leaders from BRICS countries, Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Together, they gathered to engage in crucial discussions on energy security, climate change, and the deployment of clean technology.

India Highlights Clean Energy Advances

During his address, Shri Manohar Lal emphasised India’s ambitious endeavours in clean energy.

These initiatives encompassed: A 90% increase in electricity capacity over the past decade, reaching 475 GW by 2025, with an ultimate objective of achieving 900 GW by 2032; emerging as the third-largest generator of solar and wind power on a global scale; accomplishing a 20% ethanol blending in fuel, thereby augmenting biofuel consumption and contributing to reductions in emissions; significant investments in intelligent grids and next-generation metering technologies, such as the Green Energy Corridor; and ambitious plans regarding green hydrogen and nuclear energy, to attain a nuclear capacity of 100 GW by 2047.

The establishment of India’s indigenous Carbon Credit Market was also highlighted, alongside an invitation for international partnerships.

He further underscored India’s leadership in energy efficiency, spotlighting initiatives such as the Energy Conservation Sustainable Buildings Code, the rollout of rooftop solar systems, and standards for energy-efficient appliances.

Energy Security & Technological Neutrality

The Union Minister warmly reaffirmed how important it is for everyone to have access to energy that is not only affordable but also utilises a wide range of technologies to tackle global energy challenges.

He emphasised the importance of renewable energy while noting that the developing world still has a central role for fossil fuels. In his appeal, he urged technologies such as coal gasification, carbon capture, and green chemicals to encourage cleaner energy consumption across the globe. He underlined that energy transitions should be fair, just, and specific to the unique circumstances of each country, reflecting the concept of common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities (CBDR-RC).

Highlights from the BRICS Joint Communiqué

The communiqué issued after the gathering emphasised some common objectives:

“We’re excited to see enhanced energy cooperation among BRICS countries and the promotion of open, non-discriminatory energy markets. Increasing the use of local currencies in energy trade will help boost economic sovereignty for all involved.

We are also committed to implementing DG 7 to provide everyone with universal access to energy and clean cooking and to eliminate energy poverty. A strong partnership via the BRICS Energy Research Cooperation Platform and the newly approved BRICS Energy Cooperation Roadmap 2025–2030 is an essential step in that direction. We seek to double energy efficiency by 2030 and extend clean energy with concessional finance across the Global South. We support aligned carbon intensity analysis, fair taxonomies, and strong sustainability certifications.”

Moreover, the communiqué highlights the NDB’s pivotal role in facilitating infrastructure investment financing using local currencies.

Previewing India’s 2026 Chairship

As he wrapped up his addresses, Shri Manohar Lal officially invited all of the BRICS nations to the 2026 BRICS Energy Forum, which would be hosted in India.

India’s devotion to promoting innovation, leadership of the Global South, and reinforcing energy partnership was reflected in this invitation.  India’s initiative at the BRICS Energy Ministers’ Meeting sets a benchmark for emerging nations hoping to balance affordability, sustainability, and equitable growth as global issues continue transforming the energy landscape.
