Chaitali Das Conferred Honorary Doctorate by NIILM University for Skill Development

Posted on April 5, 2025 By

New Delhi [India], April 5: Renowned social entrepreneur and sustainability pioneer Chaitali Das has been conferred an Honorary Doctorate (Honoris Causa) by NIILM University in recognition of her two decades of transformative work in skill development, women’s empowerment, and eco-conscious innovation. Celebrated as the ‘Queen of Jute’, Das has revolutionised the global perception of traditional jute, merging ethical fashion with social impact. Her initiatives, like ‘Jute Story Beyond Bars’, have rehabilitated prison inmates while championing inclusive growth. A Guinness World Record holder and global advocate, Das continues to redefine social entrepreneurship, proving that compassion and commerce can drive lasting change.

In this interview, she explains how she got here, and what she plans to do for the future.

What does this recognition mean to you personally and professionally, especially after your two decades of relentless social service and innovation?

This Honorary Doctorate is not just an academic milestone—it is a recognition of a journey rooted in purpose. Personally, it reaffirms my belief that when you serve with sincerity, the world takes notice. Professionally, it is a responsibility to continue leading with compassion, innovation, and inclusivity. I accept this honor on behalf of every woman, every prison inmate, and every jute artisan whose life has touched mine.

You are widely known as the ‘Queen of Jute’ or as you have said in your coffee table book as ” PAAT RANI” How did your journey in reviving jute begin, and what inspired you to take this traditional fiber to global fashion and lifestyle platforms?

The journey began with a simple observation—that a golden fiber once called the ‘fabric of India’ was fading from relevance. I saw in jute not just sustainability, but dignity—an opportunity to empower rural artisans, create green alternatives, and bring elegance to eco-conscious fashion. What inspired me was its untapped potential—and the need to bridge tradition with innovation.

Your initiative ‘Jute Story Beyond Bars’ is not just about sustainability but also about humanity. Could you share how this project is transforming the lives of prison inmates and reshaping societal perceptions?

‘Jute Story Beyond Bars’ is my soul project. It was born out of a belief that everyone deserves a second chance. We work with prison inmates to skill them in jute craftsmanship, helping them rebuild confidence and create something of value.

The products they make are symbols of resilience. And when society embraces these creations, it breaks the stigma and opens doors to inclusion. It’s art, it’s healing, it’s justice in action.

You’ve represented India at global platforms like the White House, the World Economic Forum, and several international summits. How do these experiences influence your mission and expand your vision?

Representing India on global platforms has been deeply humbling. At the White House, at Geneva, or in China—what I’ve learned is that the language of compassion, sustainability, and empowerment is universal.

These experiences have expanded my vision beyond borders. They’ve allowed me to advocate for India’s green potential and women-led enterprises globally, and to learn how powerful cross-cultural collaboration can be.

As a woman who has led delegations, broken boundaries, and set records, what message would you like to give to aspiring women entrepreneurs and social leaders in India and around the world?

To every woman out there: you are more powerful than you believe. Don’t wait for the perfect moment—start where you are, with what you have.

Use your voice, own your space. Challenges will come, but so will change. Let your purpose be louder than your fear. And always lift as you rise—empowered women empower the world.

From being a social entrepreneur to a fashionista, and from winning global awards to holding a Guinness World Record, how do you balance creativity, compassion, and commerce in your work?

Balance comes from alignment. For me, creativity is the vehicle, compassion is the fuel, and commerce is the bridge.

Every jute product we design carries a story—of a life changed, a planet protected. Fashion can be a powerful voice when driven by values.

And when impact becomes the goal, profit becomes purposeful. That’s how we build sustainable legacies.

You’ve been instrumental in poverty alleviation, skill development, and social reintegration projects across countries. How do you envision India’s role in global social entrepreneurship in the years ahead?

India is uniquely placed—rich in talent, tradition, and the spirit of jugaad or innovation. Social entrepreneurship here is not a trend, it’s a necessity.

I believe India will lead the next global movement in inclusive development. With youth engagement, policy support, and digital empowerment, our social ventures will inspire the world. We don’t just make in India—we create for humanity.

Having worked with global dignitaries, ministries, and business leaders, how important do you think cross-cultural partnerships are in driving social change and sustainable development?

They are absolutely vital.

Cross-cultural partnerships bring fresh perspectives, shared resources, and mutual respect.

My work in China, Kazakhstan, Greece, and the U.S. has shown me that no nation can build a sustainable future in isolation.

When we collaborate across borders, we don’t just exchange trade—we exchange trust, technology, and transformative ideas.

You often speak of dignity, inclusion, and acceptance for those on the margins of society.

What keeps you grounded and emotionally connected to such deep and difficult causes?

What keeps me grounded are the eyes of the women and men whose hands create our products. It’s the gratitude of a prisoner finding a new purpose, the joy of a woman earning her first income.

These are not just causes—they are human lives. And each life matters. I carry their stories in my heart—they are my biggest motivators.

Finally, as you receive this Honorary Ph.D. today, what is your message to young changemakers, and what legacy would you like your life’s work to leave behind?

My message is simple: dream with your eyes open, and serve with your heart full.

Let your success be measured not just by wealth, but by the lives you uplift.

I want my legacy to be one of compassion-driven innovation, where jute became a movement, prisons became pathways, and women rose as warriors of change.

May the work live on, far beyond me.
