The Ambiente Launches Artisan Development Initiative to Preserve India’s Traditional Rug Weaving Heritage

Posted on July 29, 2026 By

Design-led rug atelier commits to sustaining centuries-old weaving traditions, empowering artisan communities, and investing in the next generation of Indian craftspeople

New Delhi [India], July 29: The Ambiente, a design-led rug atelier rooted in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, has announced the launch of its Artisan Development Initiative, a structured program aimed at preserving India’s traditional rug weaving heritage, supporting artisan livelihoods, and developing the skills of future generations of craftspeople. The initiative reflects the company’s broader commitment to sustainable luxury and ethical craftsmanship — values embedded in the brand since its founding.

Bhadohi, widely recognized as the Carpet City of India, has been the epicenter of hand-knotted rugs weaving for centuries. The region accounts for a significant share of India’s handmade rug exports, which the Carpet Export Promotion Council of India (CEPC) values at approximately $1.4 billion annually. Despite this global demand for Indian handcrafted rugs, many traditional weaving techniques risk fading as younger generations move away from the craft in search of alternative livelihoods. The Ambiente’s initiative is a direct response to this challenge.

“At The Ambiente, we believe true luxury begins with craftsmanship. Every rug represents generations of artistry, and our Artisan Development Initiative is our commitment to preserving these traditional weaving techniques while creating sustainable opportunities for India’s artisan communities,” said Avani Khandelwal, Founder of The Ambiente.

The initiative will operate across several key pillars: skill development training for emerging weavers, fair and consistent compensation structures for existing artisans, and the integration of traditional hand-knotted, hand-tufted, and flatweave techniques into contemporary design frameworks. By bridging heritage methods with modern aesthetics, The Ambiente aims to demonstrate that authentic Indian craftsmanship is not only culturally significant but commercially viable on a global scale.

The Ambiente currently works with a network of more than 4,000 women artisans drawn from various communities across the Bhadohi region. These weavers — spanning different age groups and backgrounds — represent the backbone of the brand’s production model. The Artisan Development Initiative seeks to formalize and expand this network, ensuring that women, in particular, have access to stable employment, skills training, and recognition for their contributions to the craft.

The company is backed by more than 30 years of manufacturing expertise through its parent organization, Bhadohi Carpets, which has long supplied luxury handmade rugs to clients across India and international markets. This deep-rooted manufacturing foundation gives The Ambiente a distinct advantage in implementing a program of this scale with measurable impact.

India’s handmade rug industry is one of the country’s most culturally rich and economically significant cottage industries, employing an estimated 2 million workers across weaving clusters in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Kashmir. However, according to research by the Office of the Development Commissioner for Handicrafts, access to formal skill development programs remains limited for a large segment of artisans. The Ambiente’s initiative is positioned to address this gap at a grassroots level, focusing specifically on the Bhadohi cluster where the brand’s manufacturing operations are concentrated.

The Ambiente was founded by Avani Khandelwal — an MBA graduate from the Management Development Institute, Gurgaon — who identified an opportunity to make luxury handcrafted rugs more accessible to Indian consumers while simultaneously advocating for the artisans who produce them. The brand has since served more than 5,000 clients across India and abroad. Its flagship showroom is located at Pillar No. 11B, Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road, Sultanpur, New Delhi.

The company specializes in hand-knotted rugs, hand-tufted rugs, flatweave constructions, and bespoke custom commissions crafted from premium natural materials including wool, silk, and bamboo silk. Each piece is developed through close collaboration between the brand’s in-house design team and its artisan network — a model that ensures traditional techniques remain central to every product, even as designs evolve to meet contemporary tastes.

The Artisan Development Initiative is designed to be a long-term, ongoing investment rather than a one-time program. The Ambiente intends to document weaving techniques, mentor young artisans entering the trade, and create pathways for skilled weavers to gain broader recognition — including potential exposure through design industry networks, interior designers, and architectural communities nationally and internationally.

Interior designers, architects, hospitality professionals, and luxury homeowners who wish to support artisan-made, sustainable rug collections can explore The Ambiente’s full range of handcrafted rugs and carpets at www.theambiente.com.
